MILEY CYRUS-Vocal Profile

Vocal Type: Contralto
Vocal Range: 3 Octaves
Highest Note: E6
Highest Belt: G5
Lowest Note: C#3
Voice Analysis-Technical Aspects:
Range:
Decent working range. However, the head voice is rarely used and is not connected with the rest of her range.

Tone:
Chesty, nasal tone throughout the voice. Her low notes maintain startling resonance, while her belted notes, though well-supported, can be harsh and perceived as shouting, hinting that belts are not well-placed in the mask but lodged deep into the throat. Her head voice is soft and sweet and maintains the unique, nasal and slightly raspy timbre of the voice.

Belt-Quality/Power:
The voice is well-supported in the belting range ["Wrecking Ball"], but sounds forced and achieved via unhealthy technique. As the chest voice ascends into her upper belts (she never mixes) the tone thins very quickly. ["We Can't Stop" bridge, auto-tuned high notes]

Melisma:
Able to execute intermediate standard runs and riffs. [Backing vocals in "Can't Be Tamed"]

Pitch:
Pitch live isn't all that great. Tends to fall flat at times, especially in her 2013 performances, leading some to say she sounded like "a dying goat".

In a nutshell...
Positives:
Unique tone that maintains its timbre throughout the range. Well-supported lows, as well as the voice in general. Wide vocal range.

Negatives:
Belted notes sound "shouty" and wrongly placed. Her use of autotune (especially in her recent album, BANGERZ) leads some to doubt her ability as a vocalist.

  1. I would put her at Level 3, along with Demi, Ariana and Sia.
