Voice Analysis- Technical Aspects:
Range:
Wide vocal range. Well-connected voice- capable of transcending from chest to head voice effortlessly ("Timber").
Tone:
Well-rounded tone that carries vocal weight and attitude. Low notes are soft and lack resonance.
Power/ Belt-Quality:
Well-placed belts that travel in the mask. Her belts get weaker and thinner as the voice ascends and is slightly nasally. Belts are not well-supported.
Melisma:
Capable of singing melisma in both chest and head registers easily. Hiowever, she rarely sings riffs and runs.["Timber"]
Pitch:
Pitch live is questionable. Studio recordings heavily drip with autotune and in live performances, her playbacked voice does more singing than she does live.
In a Nutshell...
Positives:
Unique tone that carries vocal weight throughout the voice. Well-placed belts. Good use of melisma.
Negatives:
Over-use of auto-tune in studio and playback (live) lead some to believe that she cannot really sing. Poor breath support.
Her "Praying" at the Grammy's was horrible. She screams instead of sings, she has the worst breath control, and she can't reach those high notes in "Praying". I would definitely put her at Level 1.
