Voice Analysis- Technical Aspects
Range:
Demi's vocal range is 3 octaves, being pretty decent. She is able to excess her chest voice, mixed voice (which is rarely used until 2015) and her head voice, which has been rarely excessed till recently. Some say she is able to sing whistle notes ("Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas").
Tone:
Demi's tone in her lower range is soft, sweet and beautiful. Though light, it has improved tremendously since she first came out, when it was much patchier. Her mid-range gains some weight (as compared to the low notes) and has a slight nasality to it, being much better supported than her lower notes. A slight rasp and breathiness can be executed if she wishes to emote [Skyscraper]. As Demi ascends to her belting range, her voice gains even more strength, power and vocal weight, and is full and well-rounded in texture. Her belting range is strong, full, weighty and truly impressive. However, in her upper belts, the voice is sometimes pushed and slightly shrill. Her head voice is thick and full, however sounds unconnected from the rest of the range, due to it being underutilized.
Belt Quality/ Power:
Demi's belts are powerful, well-supported and sound effortless, with or without mixing.[Remember December, Nightingale, Skyscraper]. Able of altering the texture of her belts to make them even more forceful and towering, like when she belts in In Case. Her belts sound well-placed and full, carrying vocal weight. She is able to belt in full chest voice up to an A5 live, and Bb5 in studio. Capable of adding vocal growls that sound healthy.
Melisma:
Demi's runs have improved tremendously. They are no longer messy, but instead are clean and in pitch, being neatly executed. She is able to execute complex melisma effortlessly and add power in them (her cover of "Ain't No Other Man" and her song "My Love Is Like A Star"). Her voice also sounds pretty flexible while moving from note to note. However, when improvising too many ad-libs, she can sound manufactured. Her cover of Take Me To Church has shown her now decent level of riff improvisation.
Pitch:
Demi's pitch is decent. She uses little to no auto-tune while recording. Sometimes, her voice may crack and fall flat in live performances [2014- DEMI World Tour]. However, ever since choosing to belt in a healthy, even mixed voice as of 2015, the problem has seemingly disappeared.
Emotions:
This is where Demi's voice truly shines and towers almost every single other competitor in the music industry today, no one- Ariana, Tori can hold a candlestick near her here. She is able to sound vulnerable and touch the hearts of many just through her voice (Skyscraper). She is able to go from singing soft to belting loud, powerful money-notes in seconds. This is done through brilliant execution from singing in "thin-folds" to quickly belting in chesty "thick-folds". In a nutshell, Demi's voice can express whatever she wishes to, and she has no problems in connected with her audiences emotionally.
In a Nutshell...
Positives:
Overall, a brilliant and talented technical singer and emotional one. Demi has access to many technical aspects of the voice, the "belt quality", a technically brilliant tone, with fantastic support, leading to a large volume projection that is unparalled in power by other artists today. Decent melisma. Demi's voice is versatile and she can sing multiple genres, from Pop and R&B to Rock and even Jazz. As said before, she is a fantastic emoter and her voice can express a plethora of emotions by brilliant varying of dynamics. And who could forget Demi's powerful, chesty voice that stands second to none and towers over instrumentation- that's what she's known for!
Negatives:
Her upper belts are so powerful that the power may be overbearing, and the vocal weight she carries up there to her highest belts gives off the impression of bad technique- chest dragging, though her technique is a healthy chest-dominant mixed voice. However, as of 2015, the Diva no longer chest drags and uses an even mixed voice, but is inconsistent with this and still chest-drags to impress.
Overall:
Range: 9/10
Belts/ Power: 10/10--> Highlight of Demi's Voice- a top echoleon belter
Melisma: 8/10
Pitch: 8/10
Emotions:10/10
Additional Notes:
There have been some debates as to whether Demi is a full-lyric soprano or spinto soprano. This is because her tone has darkened recently and has become fuller and more rounded.

ReplyDeleteTechnically, she's a Light-Lyric Sorano, the reason being her voice is girlish yet bright and strong, though if you listen closely isn't heavy. The reason her voice sounds weighty is because of her bad technique of raising her larynx to achieve full chest voice belts, also her cracks cause some o hint her voice has edge like a Spinto
