Range:
Wide vocal range (3 octaves) and she is able to use and flip through each register flexibly. A well connected voice as she can transition from chest voice to head voice in an instant. [Her cover of "I Will Always Love You"]
Tone:
Beyonce's tone is thick and heavy, being full and well-rounded in her lower chest voice notes. As she ascends into the belting range, she uses her mixed voice, which though light, still retains the fullness of Beyonce's voice.
Vibrato:
A well-rounded, moving and well-developed vibrato can be applied in all registers of the voice. Her vibrato may be her strongest suit.
Belt Quality/Power:
When belting in mixed voice, the voice is bright and has a powerful ring to it. Her mixed belts are powerful, as they are chest-dominant and have the right amount of head voice mixed. Overall, brilliant mixing of registers to belt. However, her upper belts sound shrill if she forgoes vibrato. Her belts sound effortless, elastic and well-placed and supported. Beyonce is able to add vocal grunts achieved by healthy technique to her belts to emphasize certain words.
Melisma:
This is something Beyonce is known for. Her voice is extremely flexible and her fast and complex runs sound absolutely effortless and natural. Every single note in her runs are clearly heard and in perfect pitch.
Pitch:
Great pitch. Pitch perfect in 99% performances.
Emotions:
Beyonce is a decent-level emoter. Her vocal growls added on her money-high belts help her emphasize certain vowels and convey emotions. ("Listen", "If I Were A Boy")
In A Nutshell...
Positives:
Incredible flexibility in her voice that allows for fast complex runs carried out with ease. With powerful, healthy belts and incredible support (that allows Beyonce to dance and sing without going off pitch), Beyonce is an incredible technical singer. Coupled with a technically brilliant tone, Queen B's voice scores "high points" in every technical aspect- tone, belt quality, range, melisma and pitch.
Negatives:
Without the vibrato, Beyonce's upper belts sound shrill. Although her tone is "technically brilliant", meaning it is difficult to find flaws in her tone (e.g. too nasal/breathy etc) some say her tone is too common and boring.

ReplyDeleteHer lowest is actually an F2 and if you mean lowest supported than yes B2. Her highest is F6, although very argued, so most people go with an E6, and she has one supported Eb6. Nearly all of her C#6 are supported too.
ReplyDeleteBut that is a non-sung note which does not reflect how low she can truly sing,her lowest note is officially G2#,and she has sporadically supported A2 her F6 sounds like a non-melodic, uncontrolled yelp,but her E6s are shrill but unique and sonorous and her consistent supported range caps off at C6/C6# but seemingly always contain vibrato

ReplyDeleteThis part was completely unnecessary, especially on a site that focuses on technical/objective assessments. Whether you like or not the timbre/tone of a person is 100% subjective. In fact, I do believe that some "haters" use it as an excuse to undermine Beyoncé's vocal prowess, which is very unfair. If you can't find any technical flaws in somebody's tone, then it's not fair to criticize it. One doesn't even get to choose one's particular timbre, so...
According to The Range Place, her sung range spans from G2#-E6 and her highest belt is officially G5#, whether one finds her voice to be "boring" or "common" is completely subjective and her voice is rather unique, I might add as there are not many vocalists out there who sound like her
